We Finally Have Our Own Dedicated Server!

Awards and Announcements | Tuesday, June 10th, 2008

It didn’t take long until we realized shared and/or virtual hosting failed to satisfy our needs. By Wednesday, Keepm.com and all other services will be hosted on our own private dedicated server!

Why is This Change So Exciting?

For months, our users have requested features like SSL certificates, free subdomains, and other features that are simply unavailable while sharing a hosting server. :(

We purchased IntelĀ® Celeron 2.0ghz dedicated hosting server from lunarpages for about $100 per month. Our dedicated server will give us the freedom and power to offer all the features above plus more to come. All login information will be protected by SSL secure pages, instead of our previous encrpytion method. Other benefits included improve website performance and speed, 100% guaranteed uptime, and of course premium package plans for business larger than 1 person.

Thanks to everyone who supports Keepm! I’ll talk to you soon.

  1. You made a huge mistake by paying $100/month for a celeron server. You could’ve paid half that with a VPS and that would’ve given you WAY more power than an entry level server. Why?

    - VPS has RAID control (i assume yours has IDE/SATA - what happens when HD crashes)?

    - can you scale properly? Looks like you only get 512 which is fine but once your DB starts growing you’ll have to buy another server

    - you manage the server? with vps someone does it for you. hardware fails? they are responsible for it.

Dont be fool, you can have SSL and all the good stuff on a VPS - same featuers you’ll find on a dedicated server

  2. Bobby,

lunarpages offers managed hosting as an add-on for a small monthly fee. Managed hosting is responsible for hardware failures, reboots, 3rd party script software, etc.

The VPS server storage size is a big problem. lunarpages offers only 20 GBs, and I host over 15 GBs of content presently. I advocate the dedicated server because you have 100% control over the content on your server.

In the end, we felt dedicated hosting offered the most value in the long run.

  3. VPS would cost you roughly $60/month for 48gb of storage from a respectable VPS provider.
That’s more than enough for what you have now. Eventually if things get out of hand (which is a good problem to have), you would have to add another VPS to handle your DB. You DO NOT want to put static files and your DB on the same server. In the end, you end up paying more for a deciated server ($100 x2).
